SUMMER SCHOOL 2026
Lead safety from the inside out
A 4-week live cohort program for safety leaders and operational leaders in high-hazard industries. Using the S.A.F.E.™ model to build the leadership presence and authentic engagement that makes safety genuinely owned at every level.
Powered by the S.A.F.E.™ model
Sustainable safety culture starts with who you are as a leader, not just what you know.
The leadership gap nobody talks about
"I am aware that my own behavior has a decisive influence on how seriously my team takes safety."
In high-hazard industries, safety leaders and operational leaders often have deep expertise and genuine commitment. Yet on the floor, people comply without engaging. In meetings, safety gets noted but not owned.
The gap is rarely knowledge. It is how leaders show up. Whether their behaviour is consistent under pressure. Whether people trust them enough to speak up before something goes wrong.
The S.A.F.E.™ model
What you walk away with
A clear, practised, authentic way of showing up as a safety leader. Grounded in your values, consistent under pressure, and genuinely felt by the people around you. Not more knowledge. Real capability.

THE PERSON BEHIND THE METHOD

Wanting to keep people safe is not weakness.
It is leadership.
Chemical engineer by training. Former VP Safety and Environment at Shell and Director EHS at AkzoNobel.
Fifteen years in direct operational roles across refining, petrochemicals, chemicals and cleantech.
I have worked across four continents, in many different cultures and contexts. That taught me something no classroom could: safety means something different depending on where you stand, who you trust and what you have been through.
I have stood where you stand. I have navigated the crises, the pressure and the moments where everything depends on the people around you. That lived experience is what Be Human Be Safe is built on.

Who is this program designed for?
Safety leaders, EHS and HSE professionals, and operational leaders in high-hazard industries. It is for leaders who want to move beyond compliance and build genuine safety engagement at every level.
How is this different from other safety leadership training?
Maximum 15 participants per cohort. You work on your own leadership context across four weeks, not a generic case study. Marieke works directly with every participant throughout all four sessions.
Do I need to complete Program 1 first?
No. Both programs stand alone. Program 1 helps you get safety proposals heard by decision-makers. This program helps you lead authentically at every level. Many participants find both complementary.
What practical tools will I take away?
A completed values and leadership assessment, structured reflection worksheets from each session, and a crafted personal safety story with direct feedback. You leave with a concrete individual development plan.
Does this qualify for CPD?
Yes. You receive a certificate of completion qualifying as structured learning for IOSH, IIRSM, and equivalent professional body CPD records.
What if I cannot attend a live session?
All sessions are recorded and available within 24 hours. We strongly recommend attending live, particularly session 4 where you deliver and receive feedback on your personal story.
Can my organisation send multiple people?
Yes, and it can be highly effective when a leadership team goes through together. Contact us at info@behumanbesafe.com to discuss group enrolment or in-company options.
Is there a Dutch-language version?
A Dutch cohort is in development. Join the newsletter at www.behumanbesafe.com to be notified.

Recommendations

"Marieke worked with me as part of as major organisational change project. She demonstrated outstanding change management skills, coordinating the implementation of a new operating model across multiple refineries in Europe. She quickly mastered the key content of the changes and made the detailed design of several aspects herself. She then worked with refinery leaders and their teams to ensure that they could implement it effectively. Whilst having no formal line authority in this role, she was able to steer, energise and influence at all levels of the organisation to achieve the necessary outcome."
Andy Ray - VP Chemicals Europe - Global Excellence
"Marieke is truly passionate about occupational safety. What stood out to me during her time at Shell was how she engaged contractors as equal partners at the table, actively involving them in discussions on how to reach a higher maturity level in Health and Safety.
From my position as Global HSEQ Manager at Mourik at that time, I found the collaboration with her both effective and enjoyable."
Arend Profijt - HSEQ Management & Consultancy

”Marieke exemplifies what modern safety leadership should be. She combines deep expertise in Human and Organizational Performance with the rare ability to connect authentically across all levels of the organization. Her work creates not just safer workplaces, but stronger, more resilient teams. With Marieke, safety is not a program, it’s a mindset, rooted in trust, learning, and care for people. Any organization seeking to embed Be Human Be Safe into its DNA will find no better partner.”
